A petition to save the Woolwich Grand Theatre from the demolition diggers has been launched.
Stewart Christie who started the petition is calling on the Royal Borough of Greenwich residents to help save the Woolwich Grand Theatre as an "Asset of Community Value".
The Petition, posted on the Change.Org website, was made out for the attention of the Borough Leader Chris Roberts and others.
It calls on Greenwich Council to classify No. 38 Wellington Street, Woolwich as a listed building.
The Petitioner is asking the council to `list the Woolwich Grand Theatre as an "Asset of Community Value" under the Localism Act 2011'.
It is also urging the Council to reject the planning application to demolish the building for a six storey affordable housing.
The petitioners say they also want the Council to find ways to fund the Woolwich Grand Theatre's vision to transform it `as an arts hub for Woolwich and the surrounding areas'.
The petition was addressed to several key officials of the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
The petitioners say because Woolwich has a lack of cinemas and large multi-purpose arts venues, if the proposed demolition and re-development for housing goes ahead, one of the few remaining spaces where this can happen in Woolwich will be lost.
If the request of the petitioners is favoured, the Woolwich Grand Theatre may still be with us for the foreseeable future.
But the management of the Woolwich Grand is adopting a positive attitude to the news when Woolwich Online contacted them on the issue.
According to the Project Manager, Mr. Adrian Green, `the proposed new development on the site is very exciting and we hope to be a part of the new development'.
