The Royal Borough is introducing 20mph speed limits in residential streets across the borough as part of the important work it’s doing to make the borough’s streets even safer.
Work is due to start this month on three more new 20mph zones in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
The Royal Borough of Greenwich has one of the best road safety records in London – most recent figures show the borough has seen the biggest reduction in serious road casualties of all London boroughs. The borough is striving to keep on improving this record even further and bringing in lower speed limits is an important part of that work, alongside education programmes and awareness raising about road safety.
The three new 20mph zones being introduced this month are in:
· The Broadwater Road area, Thamesmead,
· The Calderwood Street area, Woolwich, and
· The Begbie Road area, Kidbrooke
The physical works needed to bring in the speed limits - such as introducing new signs, traffic calming measures, raised tables and road humps - are starting this week and next.

Also, further new 20mph zones will be introduced later this year in the areas around and including:
· William Barefoot Drive, Eltham,
· Weigall Road, Kidbrooke, and
· Kingsman Street, Woolwich.
When all these works are finished it will mean 65% of the borough’s residential roads will have a maximum speed limit of 20mph. The Council will then assess which of the remaining zones to do next.
It will do this by drawing up a priority list for 2016/17 based on the number and severity of any collisions on the borough's roads and will also prioritise certain locations, e.g. those close to schools or where incidents have occurred on journeys to and from school.

Councillor Danny Thorpe, Royal Borough of Greenwich Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport said: “Keeping people safe on our roads is of the utmost importance to us and it’s great that this programme to introduce lower speed limits in residential areas is progressing so well."
