Eltham Cinema Complex Gets The Go-ahead

The Royal Borough’s plans for a new cinema complex in the heart of Eltham Town Centre have been given the go-ahead at a Planning Board meeting last night.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich purchased this key site on Eltham High Street – currently leased to Poundland - to put the site to better use, creating new jobs and stimulating the town centre’s economy, spurring on the wider regeneration of the area.

Councillors have approved the plans which includes up to a six-screen cinema and two new restaurants – all of which will encourage greater numbers of people into the town centre for longer periods of time, increasing spend and boosting the local economy – as well as delivering a new attraction for local people and visitors to Eltham.

The cinema proposal is a key part of the Royal Borough’s Masterplan for Eltham – which brings together an overall vision for the future of the town centre delivering wider improvements to the environment as a whole. The borough has just consulted on a significant scheme to enhance the whole High Street environment with improvements to pavements, roads, better lighting, more landscaping and planting and more attractive open spaces.

Councillor Denise Hyland, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (right), said: “The provision of a new cinema in the heart of Eltham Town Centre will make a huge contribution towards safeguarding the long term vitality and viability of Eltham, encouraging more people back to the heart of the Town Centre. This scheme will make an important contribution to the local economy and to the borough’s cultural life. I am also delighted that this development will bring much-needed jobs to the area for local people.”

Councillor Danny Thorpe, Royal Borough of Greenwich Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills said: “The new cinema and restaurant complex make sense for Eltham and it’s good news that we can now drive this development forward. This is about safeguarding and enhancing the long term economy of Eltham Town Centre. The dynamics of the traditional town centre are changing especially with the rise of internet shopping and this is a way to bring people right into the heart of the town centre. A new cinema with restaurants and a new bar will be a real plus for the people of Eltham and visitors alike.”

It’s hoped that the cinema development will create around 70 full-time jobs with further jobs during the building work. The developers will be expected to work with GLLaB, the borough’s local labour scheme, to ensure as many of the jobs as possible will go to local people.
