Woolwich Town Centre Regeneration: Woolwich Grand Theatre Building Demolition Begins

Demolition at the Property at 38 Wellington Street, Woolwich - which housed the Woolwich Grand Theatre, is to begin soon according to contractors at site this morning.

Hoarding and Scaffolding Licences witnessed on site by Woolwich Online authorize contractors, Messrs H. Turnbull & Co. Ltd, of Surrey to carry out a three-month hoarding, fencing and demolition of the property for re-development.

When called at the site this morning, a company rep said they would meed the deadline of Monday, 7th, December, 2015.

The company rep said the demolition will be carried out in accordance with the national  demolition, waste and recycling policy and that bricks and appurtenances of the building will be saved and preserved for re-use where necessary.

The Greenwich Council approved an application brought by Messrs Secure Sleep Limited and Thirty Eight Wellington Street Limited (In Administration) for the demolition and redevelopment of the property, then occupied by The Woolwich Grand Theatre.

Their application was accompanied by a detailed Air Quality Assessment Report, Condition Survey, Energy and Noise Assessments and appeared to consider the proposed development more Economically Viable than leaving it as an entertainment venue.

Sympathizers and opposition groups quickly challenged the Councils plan and quickly began an online petition, saying they required 296 signatures to halt the plan.

As the Council pressed ahead with the demolition plan, expressions of disappointment were made by angry fans of the property.

An official statement issued by the Woolwich Grand in April, this year said it had moved out of the property because of "developers being complete morons and going against all their promises, which turned out to be lies," adding "Woolwich deserves better than, flats upon flats upon flats. It needs recreational space, and a space where people can take in the simple pleasures such as theatre and cinema."

An official permit from the Greenwich Council gives Messrs H. Turnbull & Co. Ltd., between September 9 - December 7, 2015 to complete the demolition and remove all hoarding and scaffolding used for the exercise.
