Explore South East London On Foot With ‘A Trail Through Time’ Walks, Say Royal Greenwich

by Our RGB Correspondent | Woolwich

This spring the Green Chain partnership has a series of events and walks called ‘A trail through time’, in partnership with South Eastern Trains.

Walking is a fantastic way to get outside in the fresh air in any weather, and it doesn’t matter if you’re an avid rambler or only seem to ever walk to the shop on the corner…whatever your level of fitness, walking is a great way to enjoy the great outdoors at your own pace.

The purpose of the new ‘Trail’ initiative is to highlight some of the best and little-known geological features on the Green Chain, such as Gilberts Pit in Charlton, which is a Site of Special Scientific interest because of its geological importance.

Activities in Royal Greenwich this spring include:
* An historical walk to the Thames Barrier from Woolwich Arsenal station

* Eltham Farmers' Market at Passey Place, Eltham

* London Marathon Walk from Blackheath Station - 26 miles!

* A 4-mile walk to Mottingham - for the less energetic!

* Guided tours of Maryon Wilson Animal Farm

* Oxleas Woodland Tour – Ranger-led tours of Oxleas Wood

* Volunteering opportunities at Plumstead Common

Cllr Danny Thorpe, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, said: “The new audio Time Trails are a fantastic way of bringing to life some of the amazing geological sites we have in the borough, and walking along the sign-posted Green Chain Walk is also brilliant for health and wellbeing. Easter is a great time of year to make the most of the Green Chain and the various activities and events along it, so I urge people to get out there and explore what it has to offer this spring.”

Find out more at the
Green Chain Walk website.

The Green Chain website has a wealth of information about walks in the area and also has 12 ‘audio trails’ that can be downloaded as an MP3 or listened to directly (for people who have 3G).
