Navigation Through Woolwich Waterways Halted As Thames Barrier Closed For Routine Tests

by Benson Agoha | Woolwich

All navigation through the Thames to the City has been halted today for routine maintenance of the famous protection against flooding from London's iconic river. The closure is taking place as the thames approaches the low tide - one of its two daily tides.

And according to and environmental agency staff it's the 551st time the Barrier has operated.

Coincidentally too, it was on this day in 1960 the Government announced plans to construct the Thames Barrier to protect London from flooding.

"The #ThamesBarrier is now closed as we approach low tide. It's the 551st time the Barrier has operated."

"We're closing the Thames Barrier this morning for the March test closure. River closed to navigation from 10.20" Alan of the EA tweeted.
