Community and business reps started the day off with a healthy hearty Fairtrade breakfast on Tuesday 8 March.

There was plenty of Fairtrade food on offer for the special breakfast at Woolwich Town Hall as part of Fairtrade Fortnight.

Hosted by the Mayor, Councillor Norman Adams, and deputy council leader Councillor John Fahy on, guests included representatives from businesses, community organisations, London Fire Brigade and the Army.

It followed an earlier event to launch Fairtrade Fortnight in the borough when 200 schoolchildren were invited to the Town Hall to sample Fairtrade food and find out about the campaign.

Royal Greenwich was awarded Fairtrade Borough status in 2006 for its commitment to the movement, which aims to ensure farmers are paid a fair price for their produce.

John Fahy, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Development of Cooperative Council and Social Enterprise, said: “A growing number of local businesses are now stocking Fairtrade goods with the variety and sheer number of products increasing on an almost daily basis.”

The Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Norman Adams, said: “The breakfast was an ideal opportunity for all of us to make a tangible contribution to the wellbeing of those less fortunate around the world.”

The theme of this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight, which ran from February 29 to March 13, was, Sit down for breakfast, stand up for farmers!
