A Planned address by the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari to update Nigerians on the situation concerning the coronavirus was cancelled yesterday, leaving Nigerians heaving a sigh of relief.
Buhari was widely expected to review the relaxed lock-down measures after figures continued to climb since Nigerians were allowed to step out after more than a month of lockdown.
Despite the available of cheap masks in the country, many refuse to wear it, mostly arguing that the Covid-19 in Nigeria is a hoax.
The situation is not being helped by relatives of Nigerians in America who continue to insist that the Nigerian government is fulling its citizens.
A vet told me he had been informed in a telephone conversation that Covid-19 is not in Nigeria.
The truth is that Nigeria can not even afford another lock-down. It is getting increasingly difficult to get financial help in a country not known for much government assistance to the majority in the event of an emergency like the coronavirus.
* Private school teachers who have been out of work since schools were shut two months ago have no salaries and no government 'paliative'.
* Traders are complaining because there is no inter-state movement of goods and people, meaning reduced sales.
* International buyers from the African sub-continent have also dried up due to Covid-19.
* Markets are allowed to open on three times a week.
* Self-employed motor-cycle riders who were banned in Lagos state have problems feeding their families.
* Maintenance engineers must obtain special permits for interstate movements, leading to reduced operational capacities.
* Children who are out of school do nothing more than to eat more where possible and play.
